Ha Giang backpacking tourism experiences in 2021

Suppose you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to set foot in the top land of the Fatherland. In that case, you will quickly realize that Ha Giang not only has Ma Pi Leng pass - one of the four great peaks of Vietnam but also a "tunnel" of Vietnam buckwheat flower, where you can immerse yourself in the famous Khau Vai love market. Because it is still a rather wild and somewhat dangerous place, you need to know a few Ha Giang travel experiences to discover them most clearly.

  1. Ha Giang tourism - the first land of the country, what's so special about it?

Ha Giang tourism - the first land of the country, what's so special about it?

Ha Giang is the promised land with many souls of romantics, who want to once travel around beautiful places like that fairy. Ha Giang - a place where everyone wants to go, see the charm of the buckwheat flowers, the passes with wild features, or conquer the peaks of the high mountains.

As a province located in the northernmost part of Vietnam, Ha Giang is a famous tourist destination comparable to Sapa and Ha Hoi. Here, the scenery makes people fascinated and captivated, but the beauties of people, culture, and emotions remain after that long trip.

Visiting Ha Giang, you are quickly captivated by the majestic and charming mountains. Or, in October-December, you will have the opportunity to fully enjoy the subtle fragrance, witness firsthand a purple color covered with small children. Ha Giang tourism also has the majestic Ma Pi Leng Pass. People here also often tell each other that "going to Ha Giang without conquering the top of Ma Pi Leng pass is a failure."

What else does Ha Giang have to hold you back? Those are the two most famous roads, also a place for you to have new experiences and a little bit of adventure and adventure. Dong Van - Meo Vac Road:

  • This route converges places that you can't help but feel like the northernmost point, the top of Ma Pi Leng Pass, the ancient spectrum of Dong Van, the waiting sessions in the highlands.
  • Hoang Su Phi - Xin Man Road: Where there are beautiful terraced fields to bewitching.

The most attractive point in Ha Giang is probably renting a motorbike, setting up a group of friends who also have a passion for travel, like to go backpacking like you, and then follow the pass roads to cover the beauty of the mountains.

The most ideal time to have a complete Ha Giang trip

Really, genuine backpackers going to Ha Giang never think about the time to go, only know when to go, just go without thinking. I heard that the buckwheat flowers in Ha Giang are lovely this season, so let's go. That's for backpackers in the North, but if you're in the South or Central, you should learn a little about the weather, destination, and what's outstanding in each season, so it's better to plan ahead.

  1. Traveling to Ha Gang in March
  2. Exploring Ha Giang in April
  3. Ha Giang in May-June
  4. Ha Giang tourism September, October
  5. Ha Giang tourism October - December

Traveling to Ha Gang in March

In March, Ha Giang quickly makes people numb by the thousands of pink colors of peaches and plums filled with spring sunshine.

Exploring Ha Giang in April

April is still paved with the scent of peach and plum flowers, but the Khau Vai Love Market Festival is the most special. As a big festival of the year, this is also an opportunity for boys and girls to meet, get to know each other, and couples who love each other but can't get together to chat and confiding.

Ha Giang in May-June

Coming to Ha Giang this season, you will find this place very charming, with waterfalls pouring on terraced fields. It is no longer the pouring water season only in pictures. The feeling of being cool to see the waterfalls rushing back from the tops of the mountains, then bumping into the small fields looks extremely lively. This season, people also begin to swell to the areas to sow the first seeds for the next crop. The atmosphere is also fascinating.

Ha Giang tourism September, October

A picture of the golden season will appear from September onwards, the fields begin to ripen full of life. With such a masterpiece-like natural scenery, just looking at it is not enough. You have to smell and feel the gentle fragrance of the rice flowers to feel it fully.

Ha Giang tourism October - December

The time of season change between October and November is when Ha Giang is filled with the purple color of buckwheat flowers as if covering a whole sky, full of peace and dream. Flowers grow in every corner, from the forests and hills and then into the alleys. They seem to be a symbol of the intense vitality of the people in this land.

Then December is the season of yellow mustard flowers, brilliant flowers in the corner of the sky. The tiny canola flowers, with a vitality full of shimmering under the sun and wind, will be a prominent highlight among the green colors of the mountains and forests, creating a romantic but tender space.

Ha Giang travel experience - 4 most popular ways to visit

There are 4 ways to travel to Ha Giang that are mostly chosen by you: -

  1. Option 1: Go by private vehicle (motorcycle or car)
  2. Option 2: Take a bus from Ha Hoi to Ha Giang by car guests, then rent a motorbike/car to visit and explore.
  3. Option 3: Take a motorbike tour from Hanoi
  4. Option 4: Take a car tour from Hanoi

I have had the opportunity to experience almost all of these modes of transportation. Still, to say which option is better is really difficult because everyone is different, with different health, financial, and personal needs. Below I will analyze in detail the advantages and disadvantages of the above options you follow below.

Option 1: Take a car/motorbike to Ha Giang by yourself

I have experienced once going to Ha Giang by traveling by motorbike from Hanoi to Ha Giang. I have an advice for you that you should NOT choose This option if traveling by motorbike because it is very extremely dangerous. Moreover, the road from Hanoi to Ha Giang city is almost nothing special, so traveling by motorbike is not attractive to experience. Except for those of you who are passionate about backpacking, of course, who like to conquer the roads out.

If you have a car to move, it is also an excellent suggestion because you can take the initiative in everything, especially the safety and security of the vehicle you use on the trip. Moreover, traveling by car also helps you carry more things. However, you must ensure that the person has experience driving long distances, has enough energy, and is incredibly knowledgeable about the road from Hanoi to Ha Giang.

  • Route guide from Hanoi: Ha Giang

Starting from Hanoi will have 2 directions for you to choose from. This distance is nearly 300km long, so it will take 6-7 hours to get there.

  • Route 1: Take Noi Bai Lao Cai highway: This route is relatively easy, but only for cars and motorbikes. It is not allowed to move.
  • Route 2: Crossing Highway 32: This route is for both motorbikes and cars. Although the length of the road maybe a few dozen kilometers longer, in return, it will be more splashed, and traveling will be safer and more convenient.

Option 2: Take a bus to Ha Giang, then rent a motorbike/car

This is also the option I recommend the most! This is quite a time saver. Instead of spending 6-7 hours driving a motorbike, you can take advantage of this time to get some sleep, for example, when the car runs from 10 nights, 4-5 am to arrive. Just in time, you can pack your things and go on the trip that same day. If you only have 2-3 weekends, the option of taking a bus will be the most reasonable idea.

I prefer the palace sleeper bus because it is comfortable, spacious, clean, private, and safe. It is a luxury car with 22 beds and cabins, equipped with wi-fi, curtain, entertainment screen, Massa bed. The car rental price is only about 350.000 VND (~15,21 VND)/ time, very reasonable.

Option 3: Take a motorbike tour Hanoi - Ha Giang

This is an exciting form that you can consider because they help you have a safe trip and full of beautiful scenery and experience.

It's just a motorbike tour, but precisely, you will still be able to travel by bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang City, then only move by motorbike from here. It is similar to method 2, but you won't have to worry about anything if you get it. Because the tour party takes care of everything from good food, clean places to think, beautiful places to explore, take pictures… most of all, it's can travel by motorbike in almost absolute safety. Having someone to support during the trip is, of course, better.

Option 4: Take a car tour Hanoi - Ha Giang

This is also an exciting way for you, especially if you are a lazy driver, your health is not enough for a long-distance drive. However, having gone to Ha Giang, choosing a motorbike is still the best for a young person like me.

Ha Giang travel experience by motorbike, car, bus

As I shared above, with mountainous terrain like in Ha Giang, you need to choose a really secure means of transportation. But the road in Ha Giang has many bends, slopes, few houses, but if you take a bus, it is not safe, renting a car is not secure enough, it is really worrying. Here is a bit of my sharing about passenger car services, motorbike rental, and car rental for your reference.

  1. Ha Giang travel by bus – which bus operator to choose?
  2. Motorbike and car rental service to travel to Ha Giang
  3. Where to stay when traveling to Ha Giang?
  4. Ha Giang tourism – should you stay at a hotel, motel, or homestay?
  5. Suggestions for hotels, motels, and homestays to stay in Ha Giang

Ha Giang travel by bus – which bus operator to choose?

  • Bus: Currently, Ha Hoi bus station and the northern provinces have bus routes to Ha Giang. The fare also depends on how far the car travels. If going from Hanoi, there are cars like Hung Thanh, Hai Van, Cau Me, Ngoc Cuong, Bang Phan, Khai Huyen, Khanh Hang. Buses depart from 2 main bus stations, namely My Dinh bus station and Giap Bat bus station.

The price of a bus ride is about 200.000 VND (~8,69 USD)/ticket, especially for other high-end cars. The price is higher, mainly limousines priced at 300.000-350.000 VND (~ 13,04-15,21 USD) or more. The bus operators always have a departure to Ha Giang every day. The latest trip is from 9:30 pm every day.

  • Motorbike: This way is quite suitable for young people who love backpacking and moving. The attractions in Ha Giang are still quite wild and quiet, so there is really no better vehicle to explore than a motorbike. If you are going with a family, I recommend renting a private car, 4 seats, 7 seats or 16 seats depending on the number of people.

The road to Ha Giang is quite tricky. The alleys are pretty narrow, especially the way up the passes is very dangerous. There needs to be a person who can handle the situation quickly in the group because the keys in Ha Giang are pretty scary, especially the way to the top of Ma Pi Leng's pass. If you are not confident, you can absolutely rent a car with a driver, but it is advisable to be a local because they know the roads with experience.

There will not be any gas stations in the passes and entrances to small villages. Therefore, it is safest to still fill up with gas before departure, and do not forget to bring a few liters in case.

For a safe trip, make sure you're always ready with a super durable helmet, a pair of gloves, and, better yet, a reflective vest. Currently, hotels, motels, or homestays also combine with car rental services. The price is also about 150.000 VND (~6,52 USD)/ day. However, if you have time, you should go to the shop, because the cars are regularly maintained, if there is any problem, it will be handled immediately.

Motorbike and car rental service to travel to Ha Giang

Ha Giang tourism is famous for experiencing legendary passes, so the motorbike rental service in Ha Giang is also quite bustling and methodical. You can contact to rent first or come directly and then rent later.

Right after getting off the car, you can rent it in Ha Giang city for convenience. Here is also the area where many reputable motorbike rental shops are concentrated. Here are a few motorbike rental addresses in the city. Ha Giang is famous for its many models, good service and reasonable price.

  • Ha Giang Epic Tour: 0856680000 (Loc), 123 Ly Thuong Kiet, Ha Giang
  • Hong Hao motorbike rental: 10 Pham Hong Thai, Ha Giang City, Ha Giang
  • Giang Son car rental: Km 3 Cau Me, Ha Giang city, Ha Giang
  • Hang Thuong motorbike rental: No. 15B Pham Hong Thai street - Group 17 - Minh Khai ward - Ha Giang city.

In addition to motorbike rental services, renting a car (with a driver) to travel to Ha Giang is also very popular here. Because not everyone is interested in riding a motorbike for a long time. If you do not have enough health and passion for conquering, renting a car to go sightseeing in Ha Giang is also a reasonable choice.

The car rental price will include the cost of the car with the driver. The rental price of a 5-seater vehicle will be cheaper than a 7-seat, 16-seat vehicle.

  • 5-seater car: the rental price will range from 3 million to 3.5 million (~130,39 - 152,13 USD) (depending on the rental period, is 3N2D or 2N1D).
  • 7-seater car: rental price from 3.5 million to 4 million (~152,13 - 173,86 USD) (depending on rental time).
  • 16-seat car: the rental price is in the range of 5-6 million VND (~217,32 - 260, 79 USD).

Where to stay when traveling to Ha Giang?

According to the Ha Giang travel experience of young backpackers, Dong Van and Meo Vac are two areas where you can rent a good hotel and motel.

In Ha Giang, in addition to the two areas with the most significant number of hotels and motels, Dong Van and Meo Vac, Ha Giang, Quan Ba , and Yen Minh also have an equally large number of hotels. If you miss the boat, can't rent in the other 2 places, you can drift a little further, sometimes the price is lower.

Note: There is always room fire in Ha Giang, especially on holidays. In particular, in October-December, which is the time when buckwheat flowers bloom, almost all hotels and tiny houses are full. Remarkably, the homestay has a view to see the triangular flowers with a closed schedule from a few months ago. Room rent in the high season is always high, and if going on average days, it is not too expensive.

Ha Giang tourism – should you stay at a hotel, motel, or homestay?

You can choose to stay at a hotel or a homestay, depending on your preferences. If you are going with a group of backpackers, you should rent a motel or a homestay with rooms to save money for a large group of people. On the contrary, if traveling with family, adults, and children should come to Dong Van to rent a hotel to rest comfortably.

Particularly for groups of 6-8 people, if you want to see the buckwheat flower garden, you should rent a homestay in the area of Lung Cu, Dong Van, or in Meo Vac town. Some homestays have a breathtaking view of the flower field. Imagine that every morning just opening the window is the breeze coming in. When I open my eyes, I see a whole garden of triangle flowers, purple heart fluttering in the wind, I feel delighted.

Suggestions for hotels, motels, and homestays to stay in Ha Giang

  • The slopes

Ha Giang, with mountainous terrain is mainly, famous for many bendy slopes but challenges the drivers. If you are a fan of backpacking, you should once conquer the slope of Tham Ma, running winding between two high mountain ranges. Bac Sum slope is located between Vi Xuyen and Quan Ba, bringing you to Dong Van rock plateau or Chin Khoanh slope.

Especially not to be missed Ma Pi Leng pass - one of the four great peaks of Vietnam, famous for its craggy access stretching up to 20km. Lung Cu flagpole is located in Lung Cu commune, Dong Van province, nearly 1,470m above sea level. This place, also known as the northernmost point of the country, has a sacred meaning for the government of Vietnam. • Landmark 428

Also located in the territory of Lung Cu, Dong Van, landmark 428 is known as the Border landmark, bordering Yunnan province, China.

Ha Giang tourism: Beautiful places to attract tourists

  • Hoang Su Phi

It is true to say that Hoang Su Phi is the most beautiful in the pouring water season. May is also when people here rush to go to the fields to start a new crop. Then, when it comes to September, the water poured every day has turned into golden terraces that are about to be harvested.

  • Sung La Valley

If you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the majestic scenery of Ma Pi Leng Pass, do not miss Sung La - a small valley in the middle of a rocky plateau. This place attracts many travelers by the incredible beauty of the mountains, green rice fields, and the tiny houses on the side of the road. Sung La is one of the few that still preserves the identity of the ethnic people, the image of girls carrying a mountain to pick vegetables or leisurely weaving cloth.

  • Dong Van Old Quarter

Dong Van Old Quarter is famous for still preserving the old houses with quite bold walls. If you are lucky enough to come to the old town on the full moon day, you will see a significant and ancient splendid city with lanterns hanging everywhere.

  • Palace of the Vuong family

The Vuong family's palace- known as the villa of King Meo, was built nearly 100 years ago. To do a unique project like this, the mansion's owner had to spend up to 150,000 silver coins, equivalent to 150 billion now. Up to now, the palace of the Vuong family still retains its inherent mystery, hiding in the middle of a fascinating valley that is well worth a visit.

  • Yen Minh pine forest

Somewhere, people still call the Yen Minh pine forest the second Da Lat of Vietnam. As soon as you reach the alley of the pine forest, you will feel like you are lost in a wild but quiet place, where the atmosphere is highly airy that someone does not want to return.

  • Quan Ba Twin Mountain

Another exciting destination in Ha Giang is Quan Ba Twin Mountain. The twin mountains are shaped like a complete and round chest of a young woman in her twenties.

These are just the highlights that everyone likes when coming to Ha Giang. Those who intend to return for the second and third time can explore many more places to complete the trip.

  2. Go to Phien market in Ha Giang to learn about local culture
  3. Playing with lovely highland girls
  4. Admire the terraced fields on the hillsides

See buckwheat flowers blooming all over the hillsides

Every season in Ha Giang, there will be flowers, but December alone is the season of buckwheat flowers, a blossom that only needs to be mentioned. Just the name is to imagine the beautiful land of Ha Giang. Every October, the boys, and girls come and start eagerly planning a trip at the end of October-November to admire the beauty of this miraculous flower.

Do you know where the best place to see buckwheat flowers is Sung La, everyone? The stretching flower areas are also known with the unique name of "flowering stone place," symbolizing the intense and persistent vitality of the people in the highlands. In addition, If you want to see the whole buckwheat flower, you should go to Lung Cu, Pho Bang, and Ma Pi Leng.

Go to Phien market in Ha Giang to learn about local culture

Fair market - a beauty of the highlands that you cannot miss when traveling to Ha Giang. The fitting contains all the cultural and human beauties of the ethnic minorities in the northern mountainous region. Market, where you will be filled with the colors of costumes, of brocade fabrics. Every time at the fair, people flock to each other to exchange and trade products of the mountains and forests.

Going to markets such as the shoulder-stitching love market, Pho Cao market, or Meo Vac market, there will undoubtedly be no shortage of specialties that only the mountains can have, spoiled for buying as gifts. The protein dishes of the mountainous region such as au Tau porridge, corn cakes, thang co, etc., and rustic products such as a few pounds of rice, a bunch of wild vegetables, or a bunch of bananas. All create a beautiful, poetic, colorful scene.

The market in Ha Giang is also a place to show the characteristics of each ethnic group. It is reflected in the costumes they wear. When the fair comes, everyone is busy beautifying, choosing the most beautiful dresses for themselves. And, it seems that people come here not only to wholesale and exchange what they have, but also to have fun, meet, and confide.

Playing with lovely highland girls

In many journeys to Ha Giang, someone was once captivated by her innocent and lovely eyes, the little girl in miniature versions. A quiet natural scene, houses lying quietly on the cliffs, or early mornings full of dew suddenly become poetic by their smiles and chit-chat.

There is no need for expensive silk fabrics, just everyday, effortless, and somewhat old clothes that will make you remember forever. Children in the highlands, who do not have much education, follow their mothers and grandmothers every day to the fields to play. Perhaps, the images of bare-headed children with that innocent smile will paint sweet memories in you.

Admire the terraced fields on the hillsides

"Terraces" - an accurate drawing in the middle of Ha Giang mountains, definitely a place that you - those who are passionate about travel or love nature want to get closer to. Hoang Su Phi is also one of the few places that own the most beautiful terraced fields in Vietnam.

In every season of ripe rice, around September and October, Hoang Su Phi seems to be changing a new layer of clothes, and if going in June and July, the rice is still very green. If you have the opportunity to come here in October, you will have the opportunity to participate in the new rice worshiping ceremony. According to the Red Dao people, they believe that rice also has a soul, every time it is harvested, there will be rice grains scattered everywhere; people make offerings with the meaning of offering those rice grains back.

Ha Giang's travel experience has delicious dishes and specialties as gifts?

  1. What are the delicious dishes in Ha Giang tourism?
  2. Specialties as meaningful gifts when traveling to Ha Giang

What are the delicious dishes in Ha Giang tourism?

  • Five-color sticky rice

The colors in sticky rice are not due to dyes but are cooked from leaves found in the forest. Each leaf will be extracted with colored water, so sticky rice will have all 5 favorite colors.

  • Thang Co

This dish is a bit gruesome about the origin, but the locals love it. When cooked, people will use the horse's small intestine. Thang Co dish will not have a strong smell but just mild. When you try to throw it, you will feel the aroma of cardamom, lemongrass, and "Dổi" seeds. Ha Giang sipping a hot bowl of Thang Co is more precious than delicious delicacies on a chilly afternoon.

  • Buckwheat flower cake

This type of cake is made from buckwheat seeds. The taste, when eaten, will not be easily confused with any other kind of cake. According to Ha Giang's travel experience, this typical cake is sold in many markets, priced from 10.000 - 15.000 VND (~0,43 - 0,65 USD)/ 1 piece.

  • Egg-roll cake

This dish can be considered as a breakfast dish in Ha Giang. You know, the weather in the early morning is quite cold, so people often like hot dishes. So I sat back in the booth, waited for the cake to be cooked, spread another thin layer of egg, then rolled it up to fit. Strangely, here people do not eat sweet and sour fish sauce, but broth made from bones, very special. You can find this dish in Dong Van's old town, markets, or in the city.

Specialties as meaningful gifts when traveling to Ha Giang

  • Buffalo meat in the kitchen (Thit trau gac bep)

It is not true to say that kitchen buffalo meat is a specialty only in Ha Giang. It is still inaccurate in other provinces such as Son La, Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, Lai Chau, and Lao Cai. The taste of each place may be slightly different because the cuisine in each area is not the same. So when you have the opportunity to go to provinces in the North, you can try and comment on the taste of buffalo meat in the kitchen in each place.

Although it is the kitchen buffalo meat - a specialty of the Northern mountainous region, it is pretty suitable for the taste of the lowland people. The beef is stowed on the stove, smelling the faint aroma of chili, pepper, ginger, and the scent meat.

  • Corn wine

April is the harvest of corn in Ha Giang, so this is also the season to make corn wine. To make this delicious corn wine, people must choose fat, round corn kernels to have the best taste when the wine comes out. To make corn wine takes a lot of time and effort, so no matter what, you have to buy this specialty for your loved ones to taste.

  • Mint honey

Mint honey in Ha Giang is very different from other types of love because of the sweet taste, plus the smell of silver - emanating from the mint trees is very fresh. The price of 1L of honey here is about 400.000 VND (~17,39 USD). I bought in places where people harvest, the price will be lower. Therefore, when going to Ha Giang, you must definitely visit the market or local people's houses, you will definitely have some exciting things to bring back.

In addition to the specialties that can be brought back as gifts above, you can also get some apples and oranges grown in Ha Giang or a little buckwheat cake; Gia Dui rice is also very convenient.

How many days is enough to travel Ha Giang?

Unlike Da Nang or Hue, if only 1 day to explore Ha Giang is probably not enough. Ha Giang is quite large. Tourist attractions also stretch, from Dong Van, Meo Vac, Yen Minh. If you want to travel to Ha Giang, you must definitely take the time to visit the villages and join the weekly banana markets to see the interestingness of this place.

In my opinion, you probably need at least 2 days and 3 nights to go out and backpack in Ha Giang, the time is quite reasonable, enough for you to go here and there a little. If you don't have too much time or find riding a motorbike from Hanoi quite tiring, you should catch a bus from the night before, until the following day is just ready to start the journey for the first day. Departure time is from Friday night, playing Saturday-Sunday, Sunday night getting in the car until Monday morning is in time to go to work immediately. If you feel rushed, you can ask for an extra day off to relax.

If you are a professional backpacker, to have enough time to explore the beauty of this land, you should plan a trip to Ha Giang in 3 days and 4 nights. There are very few tourist areas in Ha Giang, mainly to go, experience, and feel. The most eye-catching in Ha Giang is still the advantages of mountains, rivers, and terraces. If you come at the end of this November, you will see a whole forest of buckwheat flowers in full bloom.
